Notes on Debian, for Redhat guys

Single User Mode Equivalency

  • Boot - use grub - edit the 'kernel' line and add 'init=/bin/bash'

Configuration Equivalencies

  • /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* = /etc/network/eth and /etc/network/interfaces*
  • /etc/sysconfig/network = /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/network/eth*

Command Equivalencies

  • chkconfig = update-rc.d - the usage is not identical, but this is the Debian command which performs the equivalent function.
  • rpm = dpkg - package management is via dpkg
  • rpm -q* = dpkg-list, apt-cache search, and /var/cache/dpkg - dpkg-list can do some, but not all, of what rpm -q does. The directory mentioned retains a lot of text files which maintain additional data about the packages. apt-cache search is more like using yum.
